Week 4, Term 1 Poetry: Margaret Wise Brown

IMG_1696.JPG
This week Room 12 made our own "Important Book" inspired by Margaret Wise Brown's book called The Important Book. The Important Book is a series of patterned poems where it describes different parts of an object but always goes back to that one important thing about the object.

To make our own Important Book we interviewed someone in class that we do not know well and asked many questions to find out interesting things about that person. Then we wrote a poem about that person.

So if you've ever wondered what kind of awesome people we are, have a read at this special book!

The above is an example of the Important Book by Matilda about Jamie.

Week 4, Term 1: Language Experience

This week for our language experience we had to close our eyes and hear Mrs Millet blow a balloon until it finally popped. As a class we spent time together to come up with some great expressions to describe what we saw,  felt, heard and thought during this experience. We would like to share Breanna's writing because she included some great metaphors.

"When Mrs Millet came, she told us to sit on the mat and close our eyes. Then a mean old witch came in and started to stretch something. I did not know what it was so I started to get worried. Then she started to blow it up but it sounded like as if a big bad wolf came in and started huffing and puffing. Then POW!!! I opened my eyes and saw that the balloon had popped into shards. Everybody screamed and I jumped back."

Before we wrote this, we brainstormed on the whiteboard together as a class and came up with cool ideas and expressions that described this experience. We tried to use a metaphor, simile and an onomatopoeia.

Here is our plan for the writing:

Week 4, Term 1: Shared Reading

For the last couple of weeks, we have been reading the book called Wonder by R.J. Palacio.

The main character is August. He has a sister called Via she is really protective over Auggie (which is a short way of saying August). Auggie has a type of disease on his face, which has deformed his face. Auggie likes to play ball, eat ice cream and play X-box.

Auggie’s friends from Beecher Prep School is Jack Will and he is really nice. He does not like Julian because he is mean and always says rude things to Auggie. Another friend of Auggie is Summer and she has been really kind to Auggie. Auggie’s mum really likes Summer. Charlotte is nice as well like Summer.

As Miss Sung read the book aloud to us, we practiced making predictions, and made a character map on some of the main characters. We used the FAST map and looked at what the character's Feelings, Actions, Sayings and Thoughts.
